AX on Dolphin: Explantation and Instructions

This page haves the details and research of the functionality of F-Zero AX on Dolphin. I'm not involucrated in Dolphin development (And the last triforce version was on 2014) and this is only a research about the behaviour of the game on Dolphin. (It works perfectly on Wii)

To play AX (The proper arcade version, not the one hidden in GX) in Dolphin you would need the iso and

Dolphin 4.0-312 of the triforce branch. (315 haves a black screen with AX) You would also need gecko codes, which can be downloaded on the emulator itself.

After you downloaded Dolphin and set it up, you must have set the directory of the games to the AX folder, (or the iso) since you need to use some codes. While it appears as VirtuaStriker2002, this is just a weird error and it's still AX. Right-click it and go to Gecko codes and click on a button to download the codes and then check "access title sequence instead of test menu".  Start the game, press Z button some times on JVS screen (You insert credits with that) then Y button and press Start on the logos. (It will crash if you try to press it on the title sequence)

You can find the iso on isozone.

You can enter the AX menu and choose Race mode or Time Attack mode, but you must select them with start since the accelerator button doesn't work properly. The acceleration button is always pressed and you can't unpress it, the brakes don't work at all, you can't use the slide buttons (seemingly), there is a button to make the machine go down midair (It will always go up midair without pressing anything, and it's not normal) and the boost doesn't work either. The camera mostly screws up at the start of the race and fixes itself (Starts working properly) on a certain part of the course and then messes up again on another place. (Commonly the start lane) On the images (From AX Dolphin) there are indications on the minimap about where the cam messes up and where it fixes, with red being where the camera fixes and blue being where it messes up.

Sonic Oval: There is no problem with the track apart from the camera problem. Approximately halfway on the track it fixes up and then it screws up again on the start. (Indicated in the minimap of the image)

Outer Space: The track camera, as commonly, starts having problems on the start of the track, and it corrects near the end of the pipe. It can be the easiest to run, simply because you don't need to turn, just go foward until you get out of the pipe, where the cam fixes.

Port Town: Haves the most issues to play on Dolphin. You just can't cros the start line or else the machine hangs like on the image. (It doesn't freeze, it just stays like that while time goes down) It seems like a debug text what appeared as "NaN_cam_pers" but nothing else to note. While you can't normally do much else due to brakes not working and being forced to go foward, with some codes (Either max speed modifier that sets it really low, or jump code) you can go back and if you used the jump code, mostly go and look around. The text on the image itself was placed before I tried using another codes. Landing on some pipes with the fly code allows you to drive on some of those, and going on a certain side makes you fall offcourse by no reason (Just teleports you offcourse) and then puts you back on the start, where it gets stuck again.

Lightning - Thunder Road: Seems to be the course (of AX normal tracks) that haves most time with the camera not screwed up, without counting other tracks not normally accesible on real AX without codes. Also, when the camera messes up, you can see some tracks being invisible/floating track lights. This must be due to the game rendering (possibly) most of track stuff near the machine, with the far far things not being rendered, and due to the messed camera you can notice this.

Green Plant - Spiral: Like the others, the camera screws up on the start. I haven't tested everything on the track, but falling on a certain place (Found this while trying to drive on a curve with the screwed cam, seemingly there being a wall-less track) makes you get stuck like on Port Town. The screenshot here is a placeholder. Trying to turn around and go back in reverse gets you glitched too. You can use the jump/fly code to land on another part of the track, and from then driving on the start lane makes the machine stuck again.

Aeropolis - Screw Drive: Soon to be added here.

Mute City - Twist Road: It's the most "playable" track where it haves the most time with the camera not messing up. While all of the above tracks are from AX, this and the ones below are from GX and are only accesible with codes. Notice that there is also a different road texture. (Old texture from early versions)

Big Blue - Drift Highway: It haves a detail that the camera actually fixes/messes up two times in a same lap, but both happen near the start. Also, on the image of this course, the cam fix is indicated with blue and cam messup is indicated by red.

Glitches, oddities, etc.

There are many details of AX, and there are also many glitches when AX is emulated on Dolphin.

Note that some few

-The attract mode behaves weird if you let it start when you start the game on Dolphin.

(Missing logos, using track-in-attract music instead of normal advertise music, freezes when it    ends)

-If you let the attract mode roll after doing a race, it looks and sounds properly, (But still missing the Press Start banner) and succefully goes into License Card and Tutorial.

-It gives you the option to input your name after beating a race (Confirmed on Time Attack) but only allows you to use 3 letters (Not sure if this normal) and it doesn't save the records when you reset the emulator.

-Commonly, as noted before, the camera can mess up, and always does on the start. It can be noticed on most tracks that when you go on the way opposite to the goal lane, and pass to a section which is "below" the goal lane on the minimap (To explain it easily) the camera starts behaving correctly until you go on a section "above" the goal lane or going through the goal lane itself. The camera also fixes if you turn around on the start then go back, but can mess up as explained above.

-The AX menu is missing some SFX (When you move the cursor, selecting something, etc)

-Similarly, the narrator doesn't call out the name of the stage you choose. (Unless it's not a stage from AX, which it will always call the same name, but I'm not sure what does he say)

-Some tracks (Like Big Blue, Fire Field, Phantom Road, etc) don't have their own course preview thumbnail (They use a dummy one), but Mute City and Vegas/Casino Palace have their own preview thumbnail, and Vegas/Casino Palace wasn't used at all on AX normally.

(Sonic Oval preview thumbnail is different from the normal unused Mute City thumbnail, which was used on the japanese version of GX)

-Fire Field is simply called "Fire" on AX, and Story 8 from GX also uses the "Fire" venue name.

Also, Phantom Road and Cosmo Terminal are called "Rainbow Road" and "Elevator" respectively.

-Some tracks use a complete dummy thumbnail or a glitched one.

-All track venues that are not used on AX don't have music.

-AX in Dolphin seems to have problems with cylinders/pipes, as many glitches mostly happen when they are on the track.

-Lightning - Half Pipe gets you stuck like on the other tracks, with the machine floating and debug text, when you get to the sharp curve ahead the goal.

-By whatever reason, Fire Field - Cylinder Knot goes normally when you drive on the cylinder until you get a certain point, which it just starts teleporting you to the start and in a loop when it gets just a little while on the cylinder.

-AX Port Town track is not very playable because it glitches you when you cross the start lane. (You need to use codes to avoid crossing it since Dolphin always keeps the accelerator pressed)

-Likewise, on the attract and license attract, the machines also end freezing up on the start, with also mostly then appearing rescue ufos on them, and placing them on the back of the start road.

-On Dolphin, the wheel on the tutorial is textureless.

-The camera on the attract (And mostly on the tutorial) messes up like on the races.
